theme park™ is a nostalgic & interactive art event for creatives to explore, network and have fun! All artists have a playful nature to their craft, and as we grow older the element of play slowly fades. This event aims to recapture our child-like qualities through a creative amusement playground.

It also marks the launch of the creative umbrella – theme park™ – a place where artists can come together to create unique experiences. All projects are THEMED and create a special adventure with every release.

The exhibition includes a series of interactive art games that allow visitors a chance to win exclusive Theme Park prizes including clothes, key rings and other cool souvenirs.

‘Counter to the common line ‘apply now!’, Apply Later! isn’t an entry level job position calling for 10 years of experience. It isn’t a university degree with limited facility access and limited tuition. It isn’t an open call show with tight curatorial theming requirements, and doesn’t have vague points about vague aesthetics or give obvious answers to obvious questions. We are sorry to inform you that.. Apply Later! is a self-funded, artist-led exhibition, operating on our own terms.’

Black History Month Exhibition 2022
Black Crit are a group of emerging artists that are currently studying or have studied at Goldsmiths in recent years and support each other by critically engaging with each others practice with a level of cultural sensitivity and understanding in ways our university is unable to do so.
We celebrate Black History this month and in our daily lives, remembering that the acknowledgment of our history extends beyond one month along with the celebration of it. This exhibition showcases a wide range of works from incredible artists that identify with Blackness in some way but it’s also important to remember that all the work here is much more than that. We hope you’re able to engage with the artworks and the artists which are open to a discussion and questions.

The Worm at the Core

‘ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒎 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒆 ’

PV October 21st 6-11pm
Open 22nd Oct – 13th Nov
Thurs-Sun 1-6pm

SET Woolwich 4th Floor, East Tower. Entrance via Creton Street.

Curated by Cristiano Di Martino & Conor Ackhurst.

American Philosopher William James wrote that the awareness of our inevitable, unavoidable death is ‘The Worm at the Core’ of human consciousness.

How can we learn to live happily while being intelligently aware of our impending doom? Does knowledge of death affect the decisions we make, and how can we stop fear and anxiety overwhelming us in spite of this awareness? Creating order, rituals and symbols, we infuse our lives with stability, significance, and purpose. Enabling us to perceive that we are persons of value in a world of meaning, hence eligible for literal and/or symbolic immortality.‘ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒎 𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒆 ‘ is a group show where invited artists consider how fear of death impacts our day to day life and individual decisions.

SET Lewisham 16/11/2022 | All Day

CONGEE

Open Daily: 9AM-4PM
Wednesday 16 – Monday 21 November

Private View: 16 November 6-8.30PM

CONGEE is an installation by artist Alastair Kwan and F.A.T. Studio, which will transform SET Lewisham project space into a canteen serving Hong Kong style congee. The canteen will be open for five days between 9am-4pm, where Alastair will be cooking and serving Hong-Kong style congee: a savoury rice porridge dish widely eaten across East Asia. CONGEE will also play host to a programme of events from other artists and local organisations, which can be booked via the eventbrite links below.

Through CONGEE, the space will become a meeting point, engaging the local community in Lewisham, East South-East Asian diaspora, and celebrating the amazing diversity of London’s neighbourhoods. This project brings together research and art around congee inspired by Alastair’s own experiences and memories of growing up British Born Chinese. It draws on the cultural importance of food within immigrant communities, and how small restaurants and businesses become a focal point for the diaspora community. Congee shows the best characteristics of Cantonese food; simple, resourceful, warm, cheap, back-to-essentials and tasty. For some people congee will be a familiar dish; they might have had it growing up, and have struggled to find it in London. For others, congee will be a new experience.

How May I Serve You?

SET Kensington 26/11/2022 | 10:00 - 20:00

How May I Serve You?

Private View and Performance: 26 November 10AM-8PM

The rest of the exhibition, which includes the previous conversations collected, visual documentation of these call centres and the cubicle, will be open to the public until the 30th of Nov.

How May I Serve You? aims to disrupt the corporate customer service system to personify and reveal the experiences of those individuals hidden behind calls and online chats.  These hidden workers behind offshore outsourced online customer services still experience negative consequences inherited from colonial systems. The project recreated a live-chat platform as a space to facilitate dialogues about working conditions, automation, online identities, and outsourcing systems with three call centre agents based in Pakistan outsourced by UK companies.

In 2020, amid the pandemic, the artist Jose Garcia Oliva started to research information about online identities, call centres and the people behind those platforms. After trying to start conversations with agents through live-chat platforms, he quickly hit a wall of censorship. The agencies based in Pakistan were not allowed to disclaim any information regarding their location and working conditions. This insight gave Oliva the idea to try and contact agents privately and invite them to participate in a recreated live chat where for once, they could talk openly without risking repercussions or censorship and to bring awareness about their working conditions to the audience using those services.

Oliva contacted first Malik Ayaz and later Saadia Abbasi, two agents based in Islamabad, Pakistan, outsourced by UK companies. Together they organised a first online performance, where anyone from anywhere could join and ask them questions about their experience as call centre agents. The platform replicates the aesthetics of a live-chat service where people have the opportunity to interact through open discussions during eight working hours – one at a time – with either one of them. The idea was to open up uncensored conversations where the audience and the agents decide which questions they want to ask or answer.

SET Lewisham 01/12/2022 | 10:00 - 17:00

PV 01.12.22 18.00h-21.00h

OPEN 02.12.22 – 04.12.22 10.00h-17.00h

Ashlinn De Schonen, Lola Pedersen, May Darbyshire, & Verity Monroe present their work from a two-month residency in Lodève, France, around the construction of a wood fired kiln.

All artists involved share an affinity towards the re-upholstering of found objects, ecological systems, and inherited processes through lo-fi and DIY approaches. Each artist brings their own field of knowledge to the collaboration, with our focus shifting between the territorial organisation of land, investigative mineralogy, and experimental sculptural and building techniques. The residency is an investigation into the regions dictation on each stage of the ceramically-focused practice as it becomes the source of clay, glazes, and kiln materials, celebrating the unfolding of alternative routes to production.

Day With(out) Art 2022: BEING & BELONGING

SET Woolwich 01/12/2022 | 19:30 - 21:30

QWE’RE, The Chateau and SET are proud to partner with Visual AIDS for Day With(out) Art 2022 by presenting Being & Belonging, a programme of seven short videos highlighting under-told stories of HIV and AIDS from the perspective of artists living with HIV across the world.

The programme features newly commissioned work by Camila Arce (Argentina), Davina “Dee” Conner and Karin Hayes (USA), Jaewon Kim (South Korea), Clifford Prince King (USA), Santiago Lemus and Camilo Acosta Huntertexas (Colombia), Mikiki (Canada), and Jhoel Zempoalteca and La Jerry (México).

From navigating sex and intimacy to confronting stigma and isolation, Being & Belonging centres the emotional realities of living with HIV today. How does living with HIV shift the ways that a person experiences, asks for, or provides love, support, and belonging? The seven videos are a call for belonging from those that have been stigmatized within their communities or left out of mainstream HIV/AIDS narratives.

Doors at 7.30pm, films start at 8pm. This is a free event – feel free to bring snacks and drinks! The films will be screened in the W1 community room, someone will collect attendees from the reception area.

Visual AIDS is a New York-based non-profit that utilizes art to fight AIDS by provoking dialogue, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving a legacy, because AIDS is not over.

CLUB KIKI

Poster design by Laura Benson
Poster editing by Jessica Loust

Thanks to Sheldon Solomon, (Co-author of The Worm at the Core: On the Role of Death in Life) for contributing to the project.
